It’s that time of year again. The vineyards are busy with workers pruning and preparing for this year’s growing season. The KWC staff is not exempt from this hard work. On March 21st all KWC employees met at the Savoya vineyard to prune the company block. After a hearty meal, a few sips of bourbon and a quick tutorial from vineyard managers Mark Gould, Taylor Varuska and Seth Miller the company set out with clippers in hand. The company spent the sunny afternoon making thoughtful cuts, pulling old brush from the trellis system and then tipping and tying the new cane to the wire.
While attending the Grape Expectations trade show at The Foundry Hotel in New Orleans, Louisiana, Ken Wright Cellars representative, Ivory, met up with Tim McNally, the radio host of “The Wine Show of NoLa.” McNally was eager to get Ken himself on the show to talk about his unique experiences as a grower and a winemaker in the Oregon wine industry. During the show Ken speaks on how and when he got started in the industry, the importance of place and vineyard location, as well as his philosophies on the wine barrels he uses in the cellar. Below are some fun pictures Ivory took of the town, trade event, and The Foundry hotel.
As many of you know, the Ken Wright tasting room is located in the old Carlton train depot on Pine Street. Ken and Karen Wright kept most of the original structure and look of the train depot when they bought it and renovated it over 10 years ago. In addition to its role of a tasting room it now serves as an historic icon for Carlton. Up until recently the back side of the building was a rotting wood loading dock that served no purpose to the business or its customers. It has now transformed into a cool new space complete with an ipe wood deck, fresh cement and pavers, beautiful landscaping, and three unique fire pits. It is still to be determined exactly how this new space will be utilized, but eventually Ken wants it to become a fun new place for people to visit. There has been talk of live music and tasty drinks and eats… but stay tuned for an official announcement. A big thank you to Kris Stubberfield and everyone who helped make this happen!
