Ken's Journal, November 2011 Harvest Letter

Dear friends,
I received a wonderful email last week from Jack and Kathleen Carter. Their sentiment perfectly expresses how I feel about the capabilities of everyone on our staff. "Ken, we want to say once again what a great vineyard management team you have. Mark, Seth and Taylor ran the harvest at Carter Vineyard with thoroughness, efficiency and grace. They manage to get everything done they need to do and make it possible for the picking crew to work as fast as they can and feel good about their work. Thanks for having such a professional and personable crew."

Our vineyard team certainly deserves this praise but our winery team and volunteers performed at an incredibly high level as well. In a year that may have challenged an unfocused approach in the vineyard or winery, we excelled at all levels. The wonderful qualities we are seeing in the new wines are the direct result of so many passionate and professional people that Karen and I are so fortunate to have in our company and as friends.

A significant development occurred for us this year with Guadalupe Vineyard. After 20 years of investing in "brand" Guadalupe we were fortunate to have Kathleen Boeve and Jim Stonebridge ask us if we had interest in leasing the entire site. We are grateful to have this opportunity and to know that Guadalupe will be a part of our portfolio for decades to come.
Now that we have brought in our last vineyard we can exhale a bit and continue the fun of pressing and enjoying those wonderful primary aromas that fill the cellar from the press pan. So far, with five vineyards pressed and barreled, we could not be happier with the results. The aromatic profiles tend to be dominated by red and blue fruits, though Guadalupe was all about chocolate and tobacco. There is an attractive sappy sweetness that pleasantly coats the palate. The flavors are complex, delineated and lifted by the lovely, balanced acidity. Yummm...

After living in the dark ages technologically we now, finally, have an online shopping cart on our website www.kenwrightcellars.com We also have an updated Facebook fan page which will include occasional blogs from me discussing whatever is current and important to us (check out the latest blog regarding our history with Guadalupe! https://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=233878809994454). Our KWC/TE Wine Club continues to grow dramatically. Perks include free tastings, significant discounts on purchases and a really fun gathering in the spring that will include time in the vineyard and a delicious catered lunch. You can sign up online or by contacting Carrie@tyrusevanwine.com. Shipments will include both Ken Wright Cellars and Tyrus Evan selections and will often include a wine that is exclusive to the club.
We will be open for tasting on the Friday and Saturday following Thanksgiving, November 25th and 26th, from 10am to 4pm.

Best wishes from all of us for a safe and enjoyable holiday season.
Ken
